| As I stare up to the stars in awe and wonder...I'm curious as to what they look like up close...how something so simple could be so beautiful...how I could ever think I am of any importance when I see the perspective of the universe...so the task I have to do is intense and pressured.
I have to name a star
I have been given a real star in the sky for my birthday....and I have to name it to make it official. And I have no idea!!!! So, this is a plea to everyone...if you had a star...what would you call it? Any suggestions will be received gratefully! Please help!!!

| Hey
For my Biology homework, I had to watch Animal Farm (9pm monday's, channel 4...in case you are interested). I was all prepared to watch some rubbishy genetics science vids that look like a million years old...you know the ones that used to be put on in a cover lesson in like year 9? Anyway, it actually turned out to be quite interesting. Now, i don't know if that is just me or not, but I'm going to share my thoughts with you anyway, because I feel like rambling.
So, the programme was all about how genetic modification, selective breeding and transgenics is developing and giving the world new and possibly endless possibilities. It raised a point with me that, to be honest, i haven't givin too much thought. There is no such thing as nature anymore. Everything, well, at least 90% of the 'nature' we see around us has been selectively bred, or genetically modified to 'improve' it. For example, until a few decades ago, carrots used to be white. Now, they are all orange, due to selectively breeding them to only produce orange carrots. Fruit and Veg has been made bigger, more resistant to all sorts, and you can even get genetically modified pansies to be resistant to frost. Nothing is purely natural. Now, in this programme, there was cows that had pure muscle, no fat at all; there was featherless chickens, glow in the dark rabbits, abnormally large salmon, goats that produce spiders web thread and next week there is a rat with a human ear growing out of its back. Is this right? Should we be modifying all these things to 'improve' them? Who's to say what is better than something else? It has just made me question what is natural about nature at all anymore! I mean, they had whole herds of cloned calfs. I don't know, I'm still trying to get my head around the extreme nature of this whole thing.
They say they may have found a way to genetically modify mosquitos so they don't pass malaria around anymore, and that would prevent millions of deaths...but what would the side effects of that be? Would the whole food chain be disrupted? Also, they made these cows super muscley so they practically have so much muscle its hard to move, just to get good steak...is the whole thing worth it? Couldn't the money be better spent somewhere else? They had featherless chickens so they can survive in hotter climates so they would be a good source of food in developing countries...the birds couldn't fly, they had weird feet, and they looked really uncomfortable...but is that ok if it helps loads of people? So many questions! Anyway yeah, I just wanted to put the whole idea out there just to show whats going on in the world of science.
If your interested, check out the channel 4 page about it...http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/A/animal_farm/index.html

| Hello! First of all, I am loving the new things on xanga...the new layouts of the blogrings and whatever...love it. Also, everyone has updated lately, its awesome! Happy days!
So yesterday a bunch of us went to Sophie Andersons 18th party at some manor in garston. Sophie is a friend from swimming, and she gave us 8 invites, one for me, one for Jem, one for Tom and then spare ones. So Michael and Paul came as well. It was quite funny because Jem knew 7 people, I knew 2, Tom knew 2 and Michael and Paul didn't know anyone, and there were loads of people there, so it was quite bizarre. Everything started fine, and everyone was getting along great... However, Michael and Paul drank quite a lot, got drunk, and started fighting with each other....Tom had to intervene because it was quite nasty. Here are the pictures to prove it for those of you who don't believe me. It would appear that Jemma and I were the only sober ones there. Ok no I am actually joking, so you can all relax now!! It was a good night actually, wasn't too bad. It was a well clear night for the lunar eclipse as well. Ok, I think I am bored of this entry already....I don't really have a lot to say...so I might stop now....Im not sure!
PS Take care Ben, come back soon please!
PPS Everyone - go on Youtube and search 'Piano Lesson' and click on the first vid that comes up...well funny! Alternatively, search 'Rachmaninov had big hands' and again click on the first thingie.......well funny...possibly only to me, but I feel like sharing anyway. So there.
